Orthodox rabbi fasts for Ramadan

LONDON — An Orthodox rabbi is joining millions of Muslims around Britain in observing the month-long Ramadan fast, writes Justin Cohen. Rabbi Natan Levy – who will break from the fast to enjoy Shabbat meals with his family – hopes his unprecedented act will help to increase understanding of Islam within Anglo-Jewry. The rabbi, who is the Board of Deputies’ interfaith consultant, told Jewish News: “I’m not fasting as a prelude toward Islamic conversion. I’m just trying

Christians, Muslims hold prayer for Emab plaza blast victims

ABUJA, Nigeria — Muslim and Christian clerics converged with mourners and sympathizers at the Emab plaza blast site in Wuse 2 Abuja for an interfaith prayer session. The congregation gathered around the epicenter of the bombing on Wednesday 25th June, which killed over 20 people and injured several others still being treated at hospitals in Abuja. Many of the victims of the blast were petty traders, including fruit sellers, hawkers, taxi drivers and customers who come to the plaza to transact business. The plaza has since

Enough of tears and bloodshed

WASHINGTON — Over the past two and a half weeks, all of us who care deeply about Israel and seek peaceful resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict have been profoundly moved by the tragedy of the three teenage boys kidnapped and, we now know, murdered in cold blood on the West Bank. As a father of young children, my heart simply breaks whenever violence snatches young lives, and families and communities are senselessly plunged into mourning. While the grieving and sorrow have barely begun for the families, the debate over how to respond is in full swing as is, of course, an emotional argument over how the Israeli government should and should not react. Fear and anger drive part of the debate, with calls for retribution dominating the public discourse. Seemingly easy, emotionally satisfying, answers flow freely: Tear down the houses of the alleged kidnappers’ families. Attack Gaza to root out Hamas’ infrastructure.

Exchange program builds bridges of trust

JAKARTA, Indonesia — Ayu Kartika Dewi says she remembers vividly a warning issued by a second-grade Muslim boy in South Halmahera, North Maluku who said, “bu Ayu, don’t go near the Christians; they’re monsters, they will endanger you.” Ayu told The Jakarta Post that she wondered at the time how an eight-year-old boy could harbor such hatred toward those of another faith who had never caused him harm. Ayu was working as a volunteer teacher from 2010

UCSD Jewish, Muslim students work together for more dining options

LOS ANGELES — Jewish and Muslim student groups at UC San Diego had an idea they could work on together — creating a campus dining spot with both kosher and halal dishes. It was a small but meaningful collaboration amid tensions that have arisen from the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement, a global campaign that has sought to put economic and political pressure on Israel, in part, to

Muslims, Christians talk faith in Topeka

TOPEKA, Kansas — Earlier this month, a group of 12 Muslims from Topeka traveled to the Wabaunsee County town of Alta Vista for a return visit with members and clergy from six United Methodist churches in an effort to bring about interfaith understanding. The June 7 visit originated from a similar exchange nearly a year ago, when members of several United Methodist Church congregations in the Wabaunsee County vicinity took an educational visit to the Islamic Center of Topeka, 1115 S.E. 27th. The June trip to Alta Vista allowed

Christian, Muslim leaders aid revival despite past tragedies in the Balkans

WACO, Texas — During the 1990s, perhaps 150,000 people perished in the hellish violence that raged over the Balkan peninsula. Although the conflicts were largely defined by ethnic differences, religion played a critical role in the three-sided war between Orthodox Christians, Roman Catholics, and Muslims. Armed gangs would burst into a house and demand that residents make the sign of the cross. Your life could depend on whether you made the horizontal bar from right to left (Orthodox) or vice versa (Catholic). Across Kosovo and Bosnia-Herzegovina, ancient places of worship were desecrated and their artistic treasures vandalized. After such horrors, it might seem unthinkable to find signs of hope in the region’s religious life, but some forceful individuals demand our attention. One is Mustafa Cerić, the Islamic grand mufti of Bosnia. In the worst of the violence, his faith not only survived but grew and broadened. As he said,
